Privacy Policy
Your privacy is important to us. Here's how NetRot protects it.
Last updated: January 2024
Overview
NetRot ("we", "our", or "the extension") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding your data.
In short: We don't collect your personal information, we don't track your viewing habits, and we don't sell any data to third parties.
Information We Collect
What We DO Collect
NetRot collects only the minimum information necessary to function:
- Movie and TV Show Titles: When you browse Netflix, NetRot reads the titles of movies and TV shows displayed on the page to fetch corresponding ratings from our data sources.
- User Preferences: Your toggle settings (ratings on/off) are stored locally in your browser using Chrome's storage API. This data never leaves your device.
What We DON'T Collect
NetRot does NOT collect:
- Your Netflix account information or credentials
- Your viewing history or watch patterns
- Your personal information (name, email, etc.)
- Your browsing history outside of Netflix
- Any payment or financial information
- Your IP address or location data
- Any device identifiers or fingerprints
How We Use Information
The title information collected is used solely to:
- Query the OMDb API (Open Movie Database) to retrieve ratings from Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb, and Metacritic
- Display those ratings on your Netflix interface
- Cache ratings locally to improve performance and reduce API calls
We do not analyze, aggregate, or store this information on any external servers.
Third-Party Services
OMDb API
NetRot uses the OMDb API to fetch movie ratings. When a title is queried:
- Only the movie/show title and year are sent to OMDb
- No personal information is transmitted
- OMDb's privacy policy governs their data handling: omdbapi.com
Data Storage
All data is stored locally on your device:
- Rating Cache: Previously fetched ratings are cached in your browser's local storage to improve performance. This cache is stored only on your device.
- Preferences: Your extension settings are stored using Chrome's sync storage, which syncs across your Chrome browsers if you're signed into Chrome.
No data is stored on our servers. We do not operate any backend infrastructure that stores user data.
Data Sharing
We do not share, sell, rent, or trade any information with third parties. Period.
Permissions Explained
NetRot requests the following Chrome permissions:
- netflix.com access: Required to inject rating overlays onto Netflix pages
- Storage: Required to cache ratings and save your preferences locally
We request only the minimum permissions necessary for the extension to function.
Children's Privacy
NetRot does not knowingly collect any information from children under 13. The extension is designed to work with Netflix content and does not target or collect data from minors.
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Clear cached data: You can clear the extension's cached ratings by removing and reinstalling the extension, or by clearing your browser's local storage for Netflix
- Disable the extension: You can disable or remove NetRot at any time through Chrome's extension management
- Request information: You can contact us to ask what data (if any) we have about you – though as stated, we don't collect personal data
Security
We take security seriously:
- All API communications use HTTPS encryption
- No sensitive data is ever transmitted or stored
- The extension code is open to review on the Chrome Web Store
